University of Hertfordshire student wins recycling prize

A student from the University of Hertfordshire received an early Christmas surprise when she was awarded a new iPad2 for recycling tins of baked beans.

Shaun Fincher won the top prizeas part of a drive organised by the Hertfordshire Waste Partnership to encourage students to recycle.

Tins of baked beans were handed out during freshers week, the first week of the university year, which students had to recycle in order to enter the competition.

The Hatfield branch of ASDA donated 2,000 tins of baked beans to support the drive.

Councillor Derrick Ashley, Hertfordshire County Council's executive member for waste and chairman of the Hertfordshire Waste Partnership, said: “The cans are a great way of encouraging students to recycle.

“They can use the facilities available to them at their halls, or the household recycling scheme if they're in private accommodation.”
